Disability Insurance Statistics & Facts


As the old adage goes, "Numbers Don't Lie"!  Statistics help point out just how valuable disability insurance is, especially given the high odds of becoming disabled versus being killed at every age under 65.

  • One-third of all Americans between 35 and 65 will suffer a disability that will keep them out of work for more than 90 days.  (American Council of Life Insurers)
  • Almost 3 in 10 of today’s 20 year-olds will become disabled before reaching age 67.  (Social Security Basic Facts, 2004)
  • Thirty-year-old women have a 57% chance of becoming disabled before reaching 65 but only a 16% chance of dying.  (Conning Research 2002)
  • A fatal injury occurs every 5 minutes.  A disabling injury occurs every 1.5 seconds.  (National Safety Council, Injury Facts, 2001/2002)
  • There is a death caused by a motor vehicle crash every 12 minutes. There is a disabling injury every 14 seconds.  (National Safety Council, Injury Facts, 2003)
